Dupe There It Is. Chanel Glossimer vs. L’Oreal Colour Riche Caresse Lipgloss

Today marks the beginning of a new posting era for me.  I present to you my newest blogging category: Dupe There It Is.  A series of posts where I will do my best to match the best of the best in the beauty world with its comparable drugstore product.  A.K.A. a beauty “dupe.”

Most of the time I feel like a higher end product costs more for a reason.  99% of the time that reason is pigment.

But there an increasing amount of amazing products at the mass market level.

But this week, completely by accident, I came across a lip gloss that is a pretty amazing match for Chanel’s Levres Scintillantes Glossimer: L’Oreal Colour Riche Caresse Aqua Lacquer Ligloss.  Neither of these names are hashtag friendly, but both are gorgeous.

Let me set the scene.  I was reading the Sunday edition of the L.A. Times (July 28, 2013).  They had an article in the Image section (my favorite section along with the Business section) about the best beauty finds from drugstores and mass market stores.  They sent two makeup artists into a drugstore and the artists gave a list of their favorites.  They mentioned this L’Oreal Colour Riche Aqua Lacquer Lipgloss and gave it a 7 out of 10.

Guess who is a member of the CVS beauty club and had $5 beauty bucks burning a hole in her inbox?  That’s right, THIS GIRL.  So this lil’ diva took herself down to the CVS on Cahuenga with my product wish list from the Times article.

There were three shades of this gloss that looked gorgeous: Pink Perseverance, Pink Resistance, and Rose On and On.  I already have an embarrassing collection of light pink glosses, so I decided on the Rose shade.

When I got home and put it on my bathroom counter next to the Chanel gloss my brain started popping like the time machine in Back to The Future.  So, there you have it, my first beauty dupe completely by accident!

Rose Dupes

Chanel Levres Scintillantes Glossimer, in shade #172, “Rose Sauvage”, retail $29.50.  P.S. thank you to my friend who very generously gave me this for my birthday!

There is a reason this gloss is a world-wide best seller.  The texture is phenomenal.  Not too thick, but not too watery.  Just right.  No tackiness or goopy feel.  Your lips do not become a hair magnet.

This shade, Rose Sauvage, is beautiful and universally flattering.  The rose shade is a slightly more intense shade than my natural lip color.  I am sometimes scared of shimmer, but this gloss has a micro-shimmer that disappears when it’s on your lips.  It just catches the light perfectly and makes your lips look natural and full.

Sometimes art goes on a wall, and sometimes it goes on your lips.  Well played, Chanel.

L’Oreal Colour Riche Caresse Aqua Lacquer Lipgloss, in shade #184, “Rose On and On”, retail $9.99.

The texture of this gloss is really nice and light, again, no goopy texture, no hair stuck in your lips, like a lipgloss fly trap.

It’s a water based gloss, and it does feel slightly “watery” when you are applying, but it finishes to a nice lightweight texture.  It lasts hours, and even when the “gloss” is gone, it leaves a nice light stain behind.

It dries slightly darker than when you first apply it.  It is touch darker than the Chanel gloss, but still pretty close in shade.  The packaging looks nice.

Side note:  I had to take most of the L’Oreal photos without the tube, because the reflection off the gold was creating a slightly different color than the true shade.  Again, this gloss has a micro-shimmer, which made my lips look fuller, but you couldn’t actually see any of the shimmer particles once it was on my lips.  Definitely a great, budget-friendly, gloss!
