The 7 Best Hand Creams | Body Lotions | Oils For Dry Skin

by Molly Gardner

Baby, it’s cold outside.

Like, actually really, really cold.

Even in Los Angeles, where I live, at night the temps are a-dropping.

I grew up in Upstate New York and during the winters there my skin would get so dry that my hands would actually crack open in spots!  It’s totally insane when I think back to those days now and I wish I knew about these skin-saving hand creams and lotions then.

I wanted to share my go-to products that have performed consistently over the past few years for me.  Here are my top 7 hand and body products to help dry, winter skin!

Category | Hand Cream

Brand | skinfix

Price | $18 for 3 oz

Packaging | plastic squeeze tube with flip top

Available at | Sephora

As a makeup artist, I end up washing my hands anywhere from 10-25 times a day while I’m working.  I put makeup on the back on my hand first and apply to client’s skin from there (you get more control over the product this way) so I also end up swiping the back of my hand with a makeup wipe 17 billion more times a day.  My poor hands are r.o.u.g.h. after a day of this, so I really try to baby them.

Hands down (SEE WHAT I DID THERE) the best hand cream for super dry hands is the skinfix Hand Repair Cream.

It’s non-greasy, which is factor #1 for me with a hand cream.  This sinks in right away and is a work horse.  My hands go from crepey and dry and painful to totally moisturized in under a minute.

While I am working, doing hair and makeup on set, I’ll probably wash my hands at least 10 (but probably closer to 20) times a day.  I started using this hand cream and my hands feel even better when the day started.

I have 3 tubes of this that I keep everywhere.  It has saved my hands and I love it so, so, so much.   I make everyone around me at work use it and they have all purchased it.  It’s that good.  One of the most effective hand creams I have ever used and an amazing price.

This cream is unscented.

Brand | Deborah Lippmann

Price | $28 for 3 oz.

Packaging | plastic squeeze tube with spin open top

Available at | NordstromSephora

Next up, another favorite for sunny days and driving, is the Deborah Lippmann Rich Girl SPF 25 hand cream.  This has broad spectrum SPF 25 and anti-aging ingredients.

I typically don’t notice a huge anti-aging benefit right away, but within a month of using this hand cream daily, I noticed my hands were definitely looking smoother and brighter.  It was quite the visual difference and very impressive.

I like the SPF bonus, it’s great if you drive a lot or are outside running errands every day.  Also great: the cream sinks in immediately (a must for me obviously) so you can apply and go.

The scent is so light and pretty, it reminds me of those white flower trees that only bloom for a month in the spring in Los Angeles.

Category | Body Lotion

Brand | Ahava

Price | $29 for 8.5 oz and $56 for 24 oz (limited edition triple size)

Packaging | Plastic bottle with pump

Available at | UltaAhava

One of my favorite body lotions is this lightweight -yet- hydrating lotion from Ahava.  The lotion is fairly scentless, so it doesn’t interfere with my perfume.

As far as texture goes, this is a lighter weight products and, again, this lotion sinks almost immediately. It’s just the right amount of hydration for my skin.  It never gets to sweaty during the day when I start moving around.  The finish is nice and dry to the touch.

It’s honestly the perfect body lotion.  It’s a bit pricier, but both Ulta and Ahava run specials all the time for it.  I also have to remind myself that I need to treat the skin on my body as well as I treat the skin on my face, neck, and chest.

My skin looks so healthy when I use this.

Category | Body Lotion

Brand | Aveeno

Price | $8.00 for 18 oz

Packaging | Plastic bottle with pump

Available at | AmazonTarget

To be honest, I haven’t used this lotion since I bought a triple size bottle of the Ahava that I purchased last year that I’ve been working my way through.  But when I did use this lightweight lotion from Aveeno, I was so pleased with it.

In sinks in right away, my must have in any skin product, and feels great.  The lightweight version is a must, I love my body products feeling almost invisible.  This is also a great deal, $8 for 18 oz!!  Drugstore win.  The only downside is that it’s actually kind of hard to find in stores, but readily available on Amazon and the Target website, both linked above.

Here is a full post I did on this Aveeno lotion.

Category | Body Cream

Brand | Derma E

Price | $11 for 4 oz

Packaging | plastic tub

Available at | Amazon

This is my go-to cream for my elbows and heels, my driest areas.

I swear, as soon as I get a little dry patch, I rub some of this cream into the spot and consider it done.  This cream handles it.

The texture is a lighter weight cream.  It is slightly “greasier” finish, so I don’t use it all over.  But for your driest areas, this is incredible.  The scent is very clean and fresh.  Derma E uses all natural ingredients as well, so there’s peace of mind of what’s going into your skin.

Category | Oil

Brand | The Ordinary – Rosehip Oil

Price | $9.80 for 1 oz

Packaging |  Glass with dropper

Available at | SephoraBeautylish

Sometimes I have to cut straight to the oils.  I’ve noticed the skin especially around my neck needs oil during the winter months, or else is gets really crepe-y and dry.  This oil is really affordable so I can slather it all over my face neck, chest, hands, elbows, etc.

Not going to lie, the smell is a bit rough.  I didn’t realize rosehip oil has such a distinct scent.  But if you can make it past an “earthy” scent, it really helps my skin become luminous and hydrated.

Category | Oil

Brand | Derma E – Sage + Lavender Face Oil

Price | $15 for 1 oz

Packaging | Glass with dropper

Available at | Amazon

This is another oil that I love for how quickly it sinks in.  At first, the scent wasn’t my favorite, but I definitely got past it after a few uses.

I use this oil a lot for the backs of my hands after washing them.  I’ll add a drop to the back and rub it in, making sure to get oil on my cuticles as well.

This oil is actually intended to be used on the face, so you can cover cover yourself before bed.  I will cover my face, pat under my eyes and over my eyelids,  then neck, chest and finish by slathering my hands before I hop into bed.
