Instagram, oh, Instagram. I follow about 5 billion beauty accounts on Instagram and have to force myself not to check it every 10 minutes (30 seconds) because I love looking at makeup. And hair. And products. I don’t care if I have the products and I’m looking at someone else’s photo of it when I could just walk 5 feet into the bathroom and look at mine. I WANT TO SEE EVERYONE ELSE’S. It’s the perfect app for a beauty lover, because you can share and find products and tips so easily. Which is how I stumbled upon this foundation.
Did I need a new foundation? No. But the flawless skin I saw this foundation create on so many different faces and skintones, made me Have. To. Try. It. I got my little booty to Sephora and got color matched. I took home 3 different sample shades, because sometimes a full face looks really different than swatched on your arm or chin. Especially when it comes to full coverage foundation. They have 16 shades available. I tried Ivory, Light Beige, and Light Neutral. I ended up purchasing the full size of Light Neutral. I think I could have gone with Light Beige also, both were a great match. They do an amazing job online of explaining the undertones of each shade, which is rare and amazing to find. It makes buying online much easier.
The Amazonian Clay Foundation claims to be a 12 hour wear, full coverage foundation, with amazonian clay to improve skin over time. Tarte Cosmetics is company that uses a ton of all natural ingredients in their products and does not test on animals. A 1.7 oz tube of foundation retails for $38. Let’s talk price for a sec. That’s almost TWICE the size of most foundations. The average foundation size is 1 oz, so this $38 is actually an incredible deal for a high end foundation. I know it many seem like a lot up front, but when you break it down per ounce, 1 oz of this foundation would only be a few dollars more than the average drugstore foundation.
The finish is flawless. This is what initially attracted me to the foundation and it does not disappoint in real life. It makes your skin look like doll skin, but somehow still natural and like human skin. Every time I wear it, people ask me what my skin care routine is. That is a winning foundation, my friends. I feel like I could end the review right there, if I didn’t have so many other nice things to say about it.
The texture is a lightweight mousse. It blends so easily and in 1 to 2 layers, I achieve full coverage on my skin. I say one to two depending on whether or not I use a primer with a tint. In my normal foundation routine, I use a BB cream as a primer. I was so pleasantly surprised when in my order of this foundation they included a sample of the Tarte BB Tinted Primer with SPF 30. I opened the BB cream package to see that it comes in 4 shades. Do Tarte and I share a brain!? I love using a bb cream as my primer because it adds some coverage so that I can use less foundation but still get a full coverage look without looking like I’m wearing a mask. Full coverage is the key to that porcelain doll skin, but I hate looking like I’m wearing any foundation. I don’t want mountains moved, not me.
I want to talk more about the Tarte BB tinted primer, but am trying to work on my ADD, so I’m going to finish talking about one product first.
The foundation really does last a looong time with or without primer. It also has SPF 15, which I love, because I am pale, and sunburn while driving. That will be the title of my memoir “Sunburnt While Driving: The Molly Gardner Story.” But yes, SPF. Finding out that a product I love also has SPF is my equivalent to reaching into my pocket and finding a $5 bill. It adds a little zip to my step, ya know?
I love that the foundation lasts a long time on my skin (haven’t really timed it, but have probably def hit 12 hours) but the ingredients are very skin friendly. I’m not sure if they are improving my skin, I’ve only been using it for a month. But they are definitely not making my skin worse by clogging up my pores. I hate that feeling of wearing a foundation everyday for a week and feeling like your pores are gunked up. I honestly think that’s a huge reason to spend a bit more on a nicer foundation, because no amount of skin care can make up for wearing junky ingredients on your skin for 12 hours a day. My skin never feels dry or tight while wearing it either, no matter how long I’ve had it on for.
This foundation is also vegan, meaning it has no animal products in it, for people leading a totally vegan lifestyle (not eating or using any products from animals on your skin or clothing). I ate vegan for 3 months and I felt like a million bucks, but then PIZZA. I think about pizza at least three times a day and I wish I was kidding.
The wrap up: this foundation is a great deal-per-ounce, made with high-quality, skin improving ingredients. It is lightweight but full coverage. Long lasting and comes in 16 shades. I am totally in love with it and can not recommend it more highly. It became a favorite so quickly, like a person you meet and want to hang out with every day and after two months you’re like “This is awesome that I still like you and in fact I like you more and more each day.” That’s how best friendships, marriages, and makeup favorites are made, ladies.
The BB Tinted Primer can now have the floor. This bad boy comes with SPF 30. Have I mentioned my obsession with SPF? It retails for $35 for 1 ounce. Sephora has an amazing deal on a .5 travel size tube in Light or Medium for $10. You know I love a deal. On the Tarte website, it comes in 5 shades. I purchased mine in Light.
The texture of the BB Primer is also a lightweight mousse but feels like a mousse combined with a primer. It’s has the primer smoothness. The tint adds just enough coverage that one layer of foundation is perfect over it for me. I wore the foundation on it’s own for about a week and was very happy with it, then I tried the primer under it and my skin looked airbrushed and that was the handshake that closed the deal. The mousse is also a satin matte finish, meaning it doesn’t have any shimmer, so on days I’m tired (hungover) I sometimes mix in highlighter for a slight all over glow. But most days I use the Tarte BB primer under the foundation and people ask me about my skincare routine because they think I have perfect skin and life is beautiful.
I know some people like to wear the BB Tinted Primer on it’s own, I prefer a little more coverage, but I say go for it if you like more sheer coverage. If you are only wanting to buy one product and wondering which one to get based on coverage, I would say coverage goes in this order from most sheer (#1) to the most coverage (#3):
1. BB Tinted Primer on it’s own
2. Amazonian Clay Foundation on it’s own
3. Foundation layered over BB Primer.
I do use a damp beautyblender sponge to blend these into my skin. I apply the BB cream, blending with my fingers, then the foundation applied with my fingers, then I blend with the beautyblender. I was using the beautyblender to apply and blend at first, but I felt like it was using way more foundation for the same result. So now I just use it at the end to finish the blending.
I have started to use this primer and foundation combo most days when I do my makeup. I have a ton of makeup, so this says a lot of the foundation and primer. I love how it looks, I love the price for the quality, and love how long the makeup lasts after I apply it. Such great products from Tarte!
