Tarte Cosmetics Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation | Review + Swatches

by Molly Gardner

Instagram, oh, Instagram.  I follow about 5 billion beauty accounts on Instagram and have to force myself not to check it every 10 minutes (30 seconds) because I love looking at makeup.  And hair.  And products. Which is how I stumbled upon this foundation.

Did I need a new foundation?  No.  But the flawless skin I saw this foundation create on so many different faces and skintones, made me Have. To. Try. It.  I got my little booty to Sephora and got color matched.  I took home 3 different sample shades, because sometimes a full face looks really different than swatched on your arm or chin.

Especially when it comes to full coverage foundation.  They have 40 shades available.  I tried Light Neutral, but since they’ve expanded their range (from 16 to 40 shades) I think I’d be better in Fair-Light Honey.  They do an amazing job online of explaining the undertones of each shade, which is rare and amazing to find.  It makes buying online much easier.

Product Info |

  • Amazonian Clay Foundation claims to be a 12 hour wear, full coverage foundation, with amazonian clay to improve skin over time.
  • not tested on animals.
  • 1.7 oz tube of foundation
  • retails for $38. (That’s almost TWICE the size of most foundations.  The average foundation size is 1 oz)
  • available at Tarte . Sephora . Ulta

Finish |

The finish is flawless.  This is what initially attracted me to the foundation and it does not disappoint in real life.  It makes your skin look like doll skin, but somehow still natural and like human skin.

Every time I wear it, people ask me what my skin care routine is.  That is a winning foundation, my friends.  I feel like I could end the review right there, if I didn’t have so many other nice things to say about it.

Update: as I’ve gotten older, I have found this foundation accentuates my forehead lines a bit, but i still think it’s a great foundation for days I know I’ll be outside in heat.  It’s a great foundation for oily skin.

Texture |

The texture is a lightweight mousse.  It blends so easily and in 1 to 2 layers, I achieve full coverage on my skin.  I say one to two depending on whether or not I use a primer with a tint.

Longevity |

The foundation really does last a looong time with or without primer.  It also has SPF 15, which I love, because I am pale, and sunburn while driving.

That will be the title of my memoir “Sunburnt While Driving: The Molly Gardner Story.”  But yes, SPF.  Finding out that a product I love also has SPF is my equivalent to reaching into my pocket and finding a $5 bill.  It adds a little zip to my step, ya know?

I love that the foundation lasts a long time on my skin (haven’t really timed it, but have probably def hit 12 hours) but the ingredients are very skin friendly.  My skin always feels clearer the day after wearing it because of the clay in the formula.

This foundation is also vegan, meaning it has no animal products in it, for people leading a totally vegan lifestyle (not eating or using any products from animals on your skin or clothing).  I ate vegan for 3 months and I felt like a million bucks, but then PIZZA.  I think about pizza at least three times a day and I wish I was kidding.

Thoughts |

This foundation is a great deal-per-ounce, made with high-quality, skin improving ingredients.  It’s lightweight, but full coverage.  I am totally in love with it and can not recommend it more highly.  It became a favorite so quickly!

Light Beige.  Love this full coverage! Scars are totally covered and the edges blend perfectly with a beautyblender.  No harsh foundation lines!

Thank you for reading!  As always, I really hope these product reviews help save you time and money.   I love recommending products that really work for me.

Agreed on the tarter foundation! Been in my lineup a while now. Long lasting my skin improves and it is full finish and I find it color forgiving on my medium skin tone. Thanks for the sale heads up! Looking forward to receiving some tried and true and some “new friends” 🙂

I think this was their best sale yet! Good to know the foundation keeps improving your skin over time. I’m loving it so much so far. Did you get anything else fun from the sale?

You are talking me into this except it looks a bit dewy which might not work for me. Is it kind of a dewy finish? Also I only realized last week that all my foundations were 1 oz. and my mind was blown. Also, pizza 4 ever.

This foundation has what they call a “satin matte” finish. It’s matte but not flat or fake looking. I think you might like it! And yes, when I realized this was almost twice the size my mind was blown. #pizza4ever

I feel like I need to leave immediately to purchase this foundation. I do not even wear foundation, nor own any for the mere fact that foundation ALWAYS looks caked on my pale face. Sold.

So glad this post helped! I swear this foundation is also making my skin better. The foundation, bb cream, and beauty blender combo have been a game changer for me.

You have absolutely no under eye bags! Any advice?*_*

Thank you, Kailey, just now seeing this somehow!! I swear by a ton of water, sleep, and I def splurge when it comes to eye cream, whereas I can be pretty frugal everywhere else. I notice a huge difference when I don’t sleep enough, I look so different!

I also wear cover girl aqua smoooth in shade buff beige 725 but its a bit dark.

Hi Heletha!

Hmm, it’s really hard to tell without seeing you, but I googled those foundations you’ve been using and my best guess is the Light Neutral. Light Neutral is a really good blend of both undertones. Then if that doesn’t seem to work you could try the Light Sand next.

Also, if you have a Sephora near you, you can ask for samples of each shade. Just let them know that you need enough to cover your whole face in each shade so you can try each one. Let me know how it goes for you!

Hi! Is light neutral leaning more warm or cool?

Molly Gardner December 6, 2018 - 6:00 pm

Hi! It was a true neutral shade, a pretty equal balance. They have updated the shade range, however, and light neutral is no longer available!
