How To Get Strawberry Blonde Hair At-Home Part 5 | New Formula After the Wella Update

I’ve been experimenting with new at-home, DIY Strawberry Blonde hair color formulas ever since Wella changed the formula of their Color Charm hair color gel. Their liquid remains the same formula, to the best of my knowledge.

I have been playing around with a few different brands and color mixes and have a few formulas that are ready to share!

I hope these help you if you are on the hunt for a new Strawberry Blonde hair color formula as well.

FORMULA #1 INFO

root formula:

– 1.42 oz 6RG liquid Wella Colorcharm

– 1.42 oz 8G liquid Wella Colorcharm

– 5.68 oz Level 20 Developer

total: 8.52 oz

total developing time: 40 minutes

Strawberry Blonde Hair DIY Formula #1

Formula notes: I mixed up this formula in a mixing bottle. As it’s all liquid, it was easiest to mix and apply this way.

This formula is easy, because you are using the entire bottle of each shade, there is no need to measure. Then add 2x the amount for developer. For my roots I used level 20.

If you wanted to mix up a separate formula for the middle of hair and your ends, use the same quantity (one full bottle each of 6RG + 8G) and use level 10 developer instead.

Application: I always put oil on my ends to protect them while I color. I mixed this formula for my roots only and let it sit for 40 minutes total after applying.

Then I pulled the color down through my ends as much as possible before I hopped in the shower. At that point, I let the color rinse down to my ends and sink in for 1-2 more minutes for a gentle color refresh.

If I were doing a total color refresh, then I would have mixed up a separate formula for my ends with the same 6RG + 8G mix, but with Level 10 developer, applying it 30 minutes after the roots formula and letting it sit for 10 minutes on my length and ends.

Strawberry Blonde Results: I’ve found with this formula being all liquid, the 6RG gives me the most grey coverage and also brings the formula up to the same depth as my original 8G/8RG formula.

Cons: The downsides to this formula for me are: first, I felt a more strong “burning” sensation on my scalp vs when I use gel formulas. I do have scalp psoriasis and this can make color applications more irritating than for someone who doesn’t have this condition.

Second, the color is gorgeous but the results do fade more quickly on me vs the gel formulas. In the (weird iphone quality) photo below, you can see how my hair is almost pure blonde by the time I need a touch up.

Third, and this is not specific to the liquid, I do think Wella Color charm formulas, including the gels, are more drying that other color formulas, even from within the Wella line.

Pros: The positives are that the color results were so natural that people were stopping me to compliment my “natural red hair.” I really thought the results were absolutely stunning.

On the basis of the color results alone, I would repeat this formula. It’s a great replacement if you are looking for an exact match of my previous Strawberry Blonde DIY color formula.

FORMULA #2 INFO

roots formula:

1 oz 8.43 Wella Koleston me+

2 oz 8.3 Wella Koleston me+

3 oz Level 20 developer

total: 6 oz

total developing time roots formula: 40 minutes

ends + mid length formula:

1 oz 8.43 Wella Koleston me+

2 oz 8.3 Wella Koleston me+

3 oz Level 10 developer

total: 6 oz

total developing time roots formula: 5-10 minutes

Strawberry Blonde Hair DIY Formula #2

Formula notes: This is a thick cream formula and has to be mixed up in a bowl. I recommend getting an inexpensive scale to be able to weigh your formula and get accurate measurements.

Application: I mixed up this formula for my roots, applied, and let it develop for 30 minutes total. I then mixed up a separate formula for my mid-length and ends, but used a level 10 developer, so that the results wouldn’t end up too dark.

I let the middle + end formula sit for 10 minutes, for 40 minutes total developing time.

Strawberry Blonde Results: I love how healthy my hair felt after this formula, especially compared to the color charm. However, I need to keep tweaking the amounts of each color, because my results were too gold for my complexion.

Cons: My results were too gold. This color has faded to almost a pure gold, which is too yellow for my skin tone.

Pros: My hair felt really healthy after coloring. The color results were very rich, with total grey coverage.

Back to the drawing – or in this case – mixing board, on this formula. I like the product itself, but want my results a bit more reddish and less gold.
