How to Grow Your Hair Long | What Worked For Me

These are my best tips for growing my hair long.  I’ve been coloring my hair for over 10 years and heat style it at least once a week with either a blow dryer, flat iron, or curling iron.

I had the hardest time growing it out before, even though I always use a heat protectant, but I’ve been doing the following things over the last year and a half and I feel like my hair has gotten longer, but also healthier and fuller looking.

And my hair from March, 2013:

Tips For Hair Growth

TIP 1 |  Put some sort of an oil on the ends of your hair every single day.

I have dry hair, so I usually start putting oil on the bottom four inches of my hair.  On the front shorter layers, I only put oil on the bottom 1/2″.

I have been using the Agave Oil brand for years. I truly do think it’s the best one I have tried, because it’s deeply hydrating, but also doesn’t weight my hair down. For a more affordable option, pure olive oil is also great, just use sparingly, so that you don’t weigh your hair down.

If you have flyaway hair at the roots, rub oil through the ends, then, with whatever is left on your palms, lightly smooth over just the top layer over your hair.

I put one pump of Agave Oil on my ends every day.  My ends soak the oil up, so it never looks greasy.

Hair after using Agave Oil:

TIP 2 |  Sleep with your hair in a high, loose bun.  This will protect the delicate ends from breaking off when you toss and turn in the night.

TIP 3 |  If you can, try to only heat style when you absolutely must.

This includes blow drying, flat ironing, and curling with a curling iron.  I blow dry my roots for 10 seconds everyday to give it volume, so I get it! But try, if possible to skip heat when you can.

My “no-heat” hairstyle go to is a center part, low bun.

If you must heat style, use a high quality hair protectant.  I’ve used and repurchased this one from ghd four times now, it’s the best!

Then turn the temp on your flat iron or curling iron down to the lowest possible heat setting, that will still give you results without having to go over a section twice.

Some “no-heat” hair ideas:

TIP 4 | Avoid using metal tools on your hair.

I know it’s a big investment, but the Dyson Airwrap changed my hair. It styles my hair with lower heat settings and the majority of the attachments are not metal.

The plastic attachments don’t get as hot as metal, so my hair is much healthier!

TIP 5 |  Take a growth supplement.

I have been taking this Biosil supplement for years now. It works faster and better than Biotin, in my opinion.

It actually works so well that I have to dermaplane my face once a week to remove the peach puzz hair growth. My hair and lashes grow like crazy when I use this regularly.

I buy the liquid version of Biosil, but it tastes awful.  I got sick of pinching my nose to take the drops, so I bought these empty supplement capsules from amazon and now put my drops in one every day. You can also buy the Biosil pill version, but the liquid and empty capsules combo is a better value.

TIP 6 |  Clip-In hair extensions can help with temporary fullness and length.

For a quick boost, clipping in a few wefts can really make a difference.

Also, the longer extension hair takes the brunt of the heat styling, so your natural hair gets a bit less damage.

For fullness only: I clip in the widest pieces from my girlgetglamorousHAIR extensions a few inches above my ears, so that the ends of the extensions line up with my natural hair length.

For fullness + length: I clip in the full set of my extensions, starting below my ears, to add length to my hair.

TIP 7 |  Use high quality hair products.

Good quality shampoos, conditioners, and styling products actually do make a difference.

I use concentrated formulas. You need only a small amount of product, so in the end, they actually do work out to be a decent value.

My favorite shampoo and conditioner are these color-safe “SuperRich” formulas. I use this $8 K-beauty hair mask once a week and it turns my hair into silk. When I blow out my hair, I prep it with this ColorWow spray and it makes my hair so smooth. A little goes a long way with these concentrated formulas, so use sparingly!

  • Molly! This was super insightful for me. I'm growing my hair out after chopping it off last July. I need it to be long and lush again. I miss it! Anyway, I'm going to try a few of these! Honestly though, shampooing is one of my top 4 things to do in life, I don't think I could only wash my hair twice a week but I WILL try out that Blow dry shampoo you reccommend. Looks great!

  • Thanks on your marvelous posting! I really enjoyed reading it,

    • Thank you, Matt! I'm working on a new post now and some video tutorials. Thank you for reading and please let me know if there are any specific hair or makeup posts you'd like to see!

  • I've used the Tresemme dry shampoo too and it makes my hair very greasy. I love Dove - smells good AND works.

  • I wish you would show your loose bun you sleep in. I don't really have greasy roots, but when I sleep and then wake up my hair looks so bad and it's so tangled I have to wash it!
