DHC Head Oil | Your After-Hair-Color Savior

I love the name of this product from DHC:  Head Oil.  It makes me smile every time.  Head Oil.  So utilitarian.

DHC is a skincare, hair care, and high end food company from Japan.  I’ve sung the praises of some of their products before (their Face Cleansing Oil is life changing and I’m not exaggerating).  This hair cleansing oil retails for $23 for 1 oz.

*I love telling people my skin and hair care products are from JAPAN, it makes me feel like a way cooler person than I am.  But don’t worry, they ship from San Fransisco for their U.S. customers and send info on ingredients and how to use the products in English and Japanese.  I can not read Japanese, but am obsessed with reading all the product insert info that companies include with their products, so I read the English version and then just stare at the Japanese version and pretend like I know what’s up.  I’m an odd bird, you guys.*

This is an amazing oil that you can put directly on your scalp to sooth any irritation or scalp problems.  You can also run it through your hair to remove product buildup.  It should be required to own for all women for their after prom hair, after wedding hair, or throughout the 80’s when tube bangs were an actual thing that you sprayed in place with half of a can of hair spray.

I LOVE this product for my poor scalp after coloring.  It doesn’t disrupt my fresh color, but soothes my scalp, which is angry at me for putting gosh-darn ammonia on it every 4 to 6 weeks.  I’d love to find a gentler way to color my hair, but with it being 90% grey, traditional dye is still the way to go for me.  I just redid my roots 2 days ago and used this oil last night, to triple check that it didn’t pull any color out of my hair.  My color was exactly the same after using this oil as before.

It gets rid of all the gunk on your hair and leaves it so silky.  I use this once a week or every other week now and as my hair dries it is always a noticeably amazing hair day.  Like, mega soft, swish-in-the-breeze-hair-commercial-amazing-hair-day hair.  My hair always has incredible volume after I use this, because it’s not being weighed down with the gazillion products I like to slap on it.

This product does not have a strong scent, which is a win in my book.  The texture is a rich oil.  I have used this product generously about five times and the bottle is still 80% full.  Used twice a month, this bottle will probably last about another six to eight months for me.

How I use it:  While my hair is dry, I put a quarter size amount in the palm of my hand and then dab it on my scalp where I need it.  Then, I rub a few more drops between my palms and bring it through the length of my hair.  I let it sink in for about five minutes, longer would probably be better, then get in the shower and shampoo and condition as I normally would.

The only thing I wish that DHC would change on this product is the container.  You have to flip the bottle upside down and tap the dispenser into your palm to get the oil to come out.  This sort of hurts my palm and takes a while for enough oil to come out.  I wish that the bottle came with a dropper instead, so I could just put a few drops onto my palm quickly or directly onto my scalp.

Other than that, this is an absolute hair savior for anyone who colors their hair and/or uses products like hair spray or creams.  You will not be able to stop touching your hair the day after.  It will be so soft.  I highly recommend to use this a day or two after coloring if your scalp gets as mad at you as mine does.  I also recommend using this twice a month for everyone else, just to get the junk out of your hair.

I hope this review helps!  Thank you for reading and please feel free to share with any friends who color their hair or are up-do mavens.  Especially share if you have any friends still spraying tube bangs into place every morning.  You can follow @girlgetglamorous on Instagram for daily beauty pics.
