You Are Lovely.

Just a reminder.

You are lovely.  Truly.

I’ve been doing a lot of makeup on other people lately.  I was lucky enough to get to do makeup on a movie (agh!!!!) and have been doing a lot of makeup sessions for head shots and special events.

I’ve noticed one thing keeps coming up:  people hop into my chair and start telling me all their flaws.  I’ll be figuring out what to do for their makeup and really looking at them, taking in their features, figuring out their makeup.  Immediately, they start apologizing for their skin or saying their hair isn’t thick enough, etc.  The list goes on.  I know it’s kind of intimidating, having someone stare you down.  I’ve been on the other side of the chair enough times and apologized for my “flaws” as well.  But now, from the makeup artist’s side of the chair, I understand that it’s just someone doing their job and assessing the makeup.  Not you.  They aren’t sitting there picking you apart in their brains.  They are just trying to do their job, because that Chipotle bowl doesn’t buy itself, honey.

So, just a reminder, you are lovely.  I told each of my clients that were feeling insecure that, and I meant it, and I mean it with you and I have to remind myself of it often as well.

All of our little quirks are the things that make us lovely and different from each other.  I know this is sounding very “kumbaya”, but I mean it.  Have you ever brought up a perceived flaw, such as “Oh yeah, the bottom side of my hair gets super dry looking so I never wear ponytails because I don’t want people to see it” and had someone stare at you like you are crazy and have seventeen heads?  It’s because the underside of your hair being too dry to wear in a ponytail is probably not a real thing.

Think of when you were a baby or toddler, you loved yourself through and through, unconditionally.  We need to love ourselves on this same level everyday.  Toddlers aren’t walking around, apologizing that their cowlick makes their hair look too wild.  They got blocks to stack!  A fake lawnmower to push around the living room.  They are living life!

I can be pretty tough on myself sometimes and it starts to spiral.  I will start hyper focusing on one little “flaw” and before you know it, I’m picking everything about myself apart and feeling terrible.  Instead of focusing on all the positives about myself and being grateful for this amazing life I have, where I get to connect with you all every day, which fills my heart up so much I don’t even know how to handle it sometimes.

So please remember that.  Makeup is fun, hair extensions are (really) fun, it’s all fun and can enhance the loveliness that you already are.  Good makeup is the equivalent of wearing a tailored suit.  You’re gonna feel kick-ass, but no ones pretending like sweatpants aren’t also the jam.

The next time you start to think or say something about a flaw, stop yourself.  Take a deep breath.  You are amazing.  Live your life, push your toy lawnmower.

So remember:

Your hair is lovely and is an expression of who you are.

Your skin is lovely and shows the life you are enjoying and the laughs you have had and the pain that makes you be able to connect and empathize with others.

Your face is lovely and your eyes show how connected you are to this amazing life.

Make no apologies for yourself, you are lovely and unique and amazing.

Kumbaya.

But seriously, you are amazing and I’m so grateful you are here and a part of this blog.

  1. Thank you so much! I just lost my job (too old?) last Friday and am feeling
pretty down in the dumps and your note really helped. I have learned so much
from you already regarding beauty tips for my ‘dyed’ strawberry blonde hair and
makeup. I was strawberry blonde when I was young but now, naturally it’s all
grey & white and I’m just not ready to ‘let it go’ to that……Anyway, thank you for
listening and I so very much enjoy your blog.
    Kind Regards,
    Laura A.

    • Laura,

First, I’m so sorry you lost your job. It’s such a weird feeling and can be scary. I will say that anytime a job has ended unexpectedly for me, pretty soon after an even better opportunity has come along. I’m really hoping for you that something wonderful happens. Please keep me updated.

I’m happy that this helped you, your comment made my day!

      Molly

    • I’m so glad of the timing on this one. I love you too and am so glad to have you in my life!!
