Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2014 | Bombshell Curls Hair Tutorial

Does anyone else flip through the Victoria’s Secret catalogue just for the hair and makeup?   I know, I know, It’s like reading that very popular men’s magazine and saying “I’m here for the articles.”  Haha!

But seriously, I absolutely love how they change up their looks every season, from soft glam to heavy glam to full 1960’s bombshell.  Let’s be real, it’s alwaaaays super sexy and gorgeous, I just love how they show that lighter and heavier makeup and hair can both be beautiful.

Sooo, I did a little (a lot) of behind-the-scenes intense looking (stalking) on this year’s Victoria’s Secret fashion show looks.  This year’s hair and makeup look was definitely on the softer side.  The hair especially looks like you could touch it and roll out of bed on a second or third day and have it look tousled and pretty, which is great for me because I only wash my hair once or twice a week.  The V.S. show curls were piecey from the roots all the way down and the ends weren’t curled so the curls were more “beach” than “Shirley Temple” curls.

The curling irons used at this year’s show were from GHD.  Annnnd, crazy news, which you already know if you follow me on Instagram, is that I just won a hair contest that ghd (short for Good Hair Day) had and I won all 4 of their new curling irons!!  It was totally insane and I was genuinely surprised and SO flattered that they loved my hair style that I submitted.  I will have a full review of the irons up soon, they definitely deserve a full post.  But for now, I used them in the video for this tutorial.

Let’s dive in!  You can skip to the video at the bottom if you prefer watching instead of reading, or you can be a real nerd like me and read all the instructions, then watch the video also.

What you’ll need:

1 – curling iron or irons, 1 ” and 1 1/4″ barrel size – this looks works best with two different sizes of irons, but if you only have one you can vary the size of the curls by taking different size pieces of your hair.  I’m using these two ghd curve curling irons.  If you want to do this look on a budget, these Hot Tools curling irons are a great option.

2 – volumizing foam mousse – I used this Ojon volumizing foam.  I guess it’s been discontinued because it’s $60 on Amazon.  Crazy, I paid $11 for it.  Here’s a great affordable alternative.  …Okay, wow, I literally just went to Amazon again to find the Aveeno foam, which has also been discontinued and is $36, when I used to pay $7 for it.  I recommend this foam, which will probably be discontinued soon if my track record has shown us anything!  But basically, get a foam mousse that gives you volume, some hold, and isn’t sticky.

3 – hair extensions – I know, mine don’t match anymore which you can see in this video, because I’m trying a new color formula that will be up soon on the blog!  But please me nice to me, because I am a wear-my-heart-on-my-sleeve-wimp.  Haha.  The extensions they used at the VS show were about 2-4 inches shorter than mine.

Exciting Update!  I started my own line of premium quality human clip in hair extensions, with a full range of colors and specialty shades for redheads!  The website is www.girlgetglamorousHAIR.com.

4 – hair clips – alligator style to section off your hair and flat clips to set your curls.  I get two packs of each style because I have a lot of hair.

How To:

1:  While your hair is still damp, rub a small amount of mousse through your hair evenly from roots to ends.  I would say a quarter size dollop for shoulder length or shorter and a golf-ball size amount for longer hair.

2:  Blow dry at least the roots, so your roots are smooth.  The body of the hair can be tousled looking, if you want to let the rest air dry to save your hair from too much heat.

3:  Clip in your extensions.

4:  Section off your hair, so the layers will be easy to take down and curl.

5:  Curl away from your face, taking 1″ to 1.25″ sections.

** I use the curling iron to smooth out my hair first and give the ends a slight flip under so they aren’t stick straight.  If you have straight hair, you don’t need to straighten the whole piece, you can just flip the end under a bit so it’s not stick straight.  If you have frizzier hair like me, you’ll want to straighten it first before curling to make the curls look smoother.

This is the key thing I saw from the behind the scenes pics and videos!!  Start at the top and wrap the hair around the barrel, away from your face, starting about 3″- 4″ from your scalp and leaving out the bottom 2″ – 3″ inches.  Wrap the whole piece around the barrel before clamping the top part of the curling iron down.

6:  Leave the curls down to cool, they will be clipped up at the end.  This will make them looser curls instead of tight, bouncy curls.  Clipping them up at the end while you do your makeup does still give these loose curls some lasting power, so they won’t fall flat by the next day.

7:  I straightened my front pieces and just gave them a slight curl two inches above the ends for a looser look at the front.

8:  Clip up the curls up now.  An easy trick is use your finger as a curling iron and wrap the curls around it just as you did with the actual iron:  start 3″ away from scalp and leave the ends out.  Wind the curl up, take your finger out, holding the curl up to your head, and clip to your head, leaving the ends out.

9.  Let the curls set for about 15 or 20 minutes while you do your makeup, get dressed, etc.

10.  Take the curls down, and part your hair horizontally throughout while spraying a little hairspray at these parts.  This will give your hair subtle volume and give the curls light hold.

11.  Add a drop of oil to the ends and then rub whatever is left on your palms to the front pieces and the top for a smooth, finished look.

  1. I always loved the Victoria Secret Fashion Show looks , they always feel so glam and sexy at the same time.
Oh btw i’ve been following your blog for quite a while and dyed my hair with the same mix you use ( Wella ) and looooooove it. I found a good thing to keep up the color tho, here’s an example ( It’s not my blog , and I know its in Swedish , but my point is the before and after picture , I tried the mix myself and love the outcome )
