The Best Natural Deodorant | A Review of Kaia Naturals Takesumi Deodorants

Natural deodorant.  If you tried to make the switch from an aluminum based deodorant to a natural deodorant a few years ago, you probably don’t have the fondest memories of the experience.

I tried so many formulas that have made my skin burn, peel, smell worse (like, how, right!?) and feel sticky.  After more than three years of trying and countless dollars spent, (actually I did count and it was painful, so I’m mentally blocking the amount, ha!) I gave up.  I switched back to “regular” deodorant and figured that was what I was going to be stuck with.

I’m by no means an all-natural or an all-organic blogger, but I do try to lean towards natural ingredients and avoid chemicals when I can, like the aluminum that is in most traditional deodorant formulas.  I’ve used the same makeup remover/face wash for 14 years now and have switched over my nail polish remover and polish and most of my foundations are more natural ingredients.  Baby steps.

Deodorant was a product that I really wanted to find a natural version of, as it’s something I use daily.

I found out that the ingredient that was causing the painful skin irritation (full on rashes and blisters – fun!) is baking soda.  Baking soda can be really rough on sensitive skin.

I follow this brand Kaia Naturals on Instagram and saw that they launched a natural, bamboo and charcoal based deodorant that is baking soda free.  I already liked their face + body wipes.  They are the only wipes that make my skin feel clean and smooth and not sticky after using them – amazing for long travel days.  So I thought I’d give their deodorant a try.

My Thoughts

The first week I did have some very mild redness and thought this might be another deodorant that hits the dust.  But I decided to keep trying it for another week and all the redness went away.  I couldn’t be more happy that I kept trying it!

I’ve been using the Kaia deodorant now for over a year and absolutely love it.

1 | It works.  I smell good.

2 | It keeps my underarms dry.  On the hottest summer days, I do like to reapply half way through the day.

3 | The formula glides on easily.

4 |  No white marks on clothes.  It is grey in the tube but applies clear.

5 | Value.  The tubes retail for $21 and at first I was like, Mama Mia.  But my first tube (2.29 oz) lasted me over 7 months.  You only need three swipes under each arm for maximum efficiency.

I tried another popular all natural brand for about a month (can’t stop/won’t stop product testing, I have to try everything) and flew through that $12 tube.  So the Kaia might be a bit more dollars up front, but the stick really lasts.  I like only having to buy deodorant a couple of times a year.

The Scents

I have now purchased all three scents to try.  “Lime Mint” was the first scent that I tried and wore for over a year.  It smells fresh and is a very subtle mix of both lime and mint.  I bought a travel size (.42 oz, $10) of “Juicy Bamboo.”  That scent is a good mix of grapefruit and citrus.  I also bought a full size stick of the Rose scent and that’s hands-down my favorite.

The rose scent is floral, but not overpowering at all.  It’s light, fresh, and has a slightly retro vibe.  This is the scent that I’ll continue to buy in both the travel and full size tubes.  Update 12.4.18: the Rose scent started making my skin red and irritated, so I switched back to the Lime Mint and my skin has calmed back down.  I will stick with the Lime Mint from here on out!

What I like about all the scents is how subtle they are.  Not a single one is overpowering, they all smell really light and clean.  I just love rose scented anything and everything, so that’s my favorite.

The Verdict

Kaia Naturals is a Canadian based brand, the deodorant and all their products are made there.  Who doesn’t love America’s friendly neighbor to the north!?  They seem like a really nice company and I’m so happy to see them grow as more and more people are finding their deodorant.

I’m also selfishly happy that I’m not the only one who loves this stuff because over the past year it’s become so much easier to find online.  You can see all the stores in the shopping section below.

The bottom line, this a a great deodorant.  And not just for an all natural deodorant.  This is just a great product and I highly recommend it.
