Review | Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl

I thought “I have matte lipsticks in my lipstick drawers.  I know what matte looks like.  I like it.”  Then I tried Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil.  And things changed.  Nars has done matte in the most flattering and incredible way I’ve ever seen before.

I had seen this shade on another redhead and it looked stunning on her.  It complimented her hair and skin without screaming “I HAVE RED LIPSTICK ON.”  I couldn’t figure out how she was wearing red lipstick and making it look natural.  Being a bit on the crazy side when it comes to makeup, and yes, I’m being nice to myself saying “a bit” I asked her the shade and brand.  You can probably guess what she told me.  But seriously, red done right on a redhead is a pretty big deal in my opinion and definitely worthy of stopping a stranger.  (She was cool about it.)

I had a gift card from my birthday (my friend’s know me so well), so I ordered the Nars lip pencil in Dragon Girl from Sephora.  When I opened the package I thought it look pretty in the tube, but then I put it on and wow.   The matte finish is amazing.  It doesn’t settle into fine lines and is such a beautiful true matte.  It didn’t make my lips look dry or chapped, as sometimes a matte finish can.

Swatched.
Swatched.
It's about to go down.
It’s about to go down.

The texture, the texture, the texture. Be still My Heart.
The texture, the texture, the texture. Be still My Heart.

THE DEETS:

The Texture:  The texture is light and creamy at first then dries to a comfortable finish.  I had to be careful not to rub my lips together right after applying until it set.  My lips stayed hydrated for hours, without needing a chapstick over it.

Wear:  One application lasted me several hours until I ate.  Oink, oink.

The Color:  My feelings about this color are the things poems are written about.  The shade, described as a “siren red” is so stunning.  It flattered my skin and my strawberry blonde hair, no small feat.  I have a drawer full of “almost there” shades, that looked a little off with my hair color.  This red though, this red!!  It’s so beautiful, so of course I had to Instagram stalk it.  This shade literally looked good on every complexion: Irish, Asian, African American.  The red is not too dark, not too light, and has just the right amount of brightness.  It’s highly pigmented.

The Price:  At $25 it’s a little up there, but when I think about how much money I’ve wasted on red shades that sit in my drawer or that I’ve given away, this seems like a bargain.  Also, I bought a lip liner in red to line my lips with and don’t need it with this.  Even though the tip of the pencil isn’t that narrow, it gave really precise results.

The Conclusion:  I would definitely buy this shade again and plan to but more of these Nars Velvet Matte lip pencils in other shades.  “Dolce Vita” might be next.

I hope this review helps you!  As always, thank you for reading and sharing my blog!
