Quick + Easy Formal Updo | Hair Tutorial (with photos!)

Have you ever had one of those days where you plan to give yourself a lot of time to do your hair and makeup for a night out and then *POOF* you have 15 minutes?

Yeah, me too.  All the time actually.  I am forever running behind, so I’ve had to master a few super fast hairstyles.

I saw this updo on Instagram a year or so ago and feel completely in love.  It looked SO hard but then when I started breaking it down, I realized it’s actually fairly simple.

I also love that it can be worn sleek, or pulled apart a little bit at the end for a more “undone” look.

For today’s tutorial, I am happy to collaborate with Remington!

I am using their “Just Stay” bobby pins, which have a little grip to them but don’t pull out your hair like some strong grip pins.

I genuinely love these pins and will be keeping them stocked in my personal and pro kit when I lose all 45 bobby pins that came in this pack, in about 3 weeks.  Haha!  Where do bobby pins go!?  Where.

I can’t explain why, but this might be one of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken.  I just love it.

Ok, let’s hop to it, shall we?

You will need: the bobby pins, a teasing brush, and two hair elastics.

I also like to get a little texture spray lightly sprayed in between layers of my hair to add grip.

I am wearing my 16″ set of girlgetglamorousHAIR extensions to add volume to my bun, but you can definitely do this look with just natural hair also.

How to: Quick + Easy Updo |

1 | Part hair to tease crown and create your top section.

2 | Tease crown.

3 | Gather top half of hair into a half up ponytail, secure with an elastic.

4 | From the side of your head, above your ear, bring a 1″ section over the ponytail you just created and use a bobby pin to secure the hair.

5| Repeat with hair from the other side of your head.  This will give you a nice criss-crossed look and hide the elastic.

6 | Gather the remaining hair into a low ponytail, secure with your second elastic, and wrap the hair around into a bun.

7 | Tuck the ends of the hair into the elastic to secure the bun and start adding bobby pins at the base of the bun to help hold it in place.

8 | You can leave the bun as is for a sleek look, or gently pull on the sides of the bun for a more undone, messy boho look.  I also like to take out a few pieces at the front to frame my face.

That’s it!  It’s good to practice this once or twice before a nigh out, but then it moves along pretty quickly after that.  I really love how elegant this style looks.
