MANGA MADNESS | L’Oreal Manga Mascara Review

Manga is L’oreal’s new mascara.  It’s part of the “Voluminous” line and promises to build 15 times more volume than bare lashes and give you a wide-eyed look.

Here’s the scoop:  It retails for $8 and is available in Blackest Black, Black, and Black Brown.  I purchased Black Brown because I wanted a softer shade of mascara than I’ve been wearing and felt like this might be a good shade with the hint of black mixed in.  Spoiler alert: It is.

Let’s get the bad out of the way so we can chat positives.  The mascara claims to be safe for sensitive eyes, but it did burn my eyes when I applied it and for about a minute afterwards.  So if you have really sensitive eyes, this might not be the mascara for you.  Now the positives.

I will expand, but some of the things I loved about this mascara:

1.  It really works.  It builds up the volume a ton.

2.  It has a flexible wand.

3.  It does not flake or budge.

4.  It removed easily with my cleansing oil makeup remover.

Volume:  The first time I used this mascara, I was surprised how much volume two coats gave my lashes.  It’s definitely on par with higher end mascaras.  This is usually what bothers me about drugstore mascaras is that they never give my lashes enough volume.  My lashes look wimpy after.  Not with Manga!  I got big, full looking lashes, with no clumps.  I do have to comb it out right away so that it doesn’t clump, but I have to do that with all my volume building mascaras.  Get the Sonia Kashuk eyelash comb with the metal bristles.  It’s only $8 and way better than any plastic eyelash comb you’ll ever use.

Flexible Wand:  The wand has a flexible point about 3/4 of the way up towards the bristles.  This is rad.  It really helps when you are working the brush as close to your eye as you can.  The brush bends a bit and allows you to get mascara at the base of your lashes.  Now, if you have dark lashes you probably haven’t thought about this.  But us Pale Ladies have all had that moment where the bottom half of your lashes are blonde and the top half is black.  So this flexible brush is great because it really does help coat the whole length of the lashes.

No Flaking:  Good news, this mascara does not flake!  I feel the like general consensus with L’Oreal’s Butterfly mascara was that it flaked after 3 or 4 hours, which is what happened when I wore it.  But the Manga does not smudge, flake, or give you raccoon circles.  I got through an hour long workout where I was pouring sweat and repeatedly wiping my face with a towel and after the workout it looked like I had just applied the mascara. Won-der-ful.

Bye-Bye:  I put my DHC Deep Cleansing Oil on my face, gently tap it on top of my eyes, and this mascara slides right off.

Overall: I love this mascara!  I’m Mad for Manga!  I’m excited to finally have a drugstore mascara that I genuinely, genuinely love.  Get it with the eyelash comb I recommended and you’ll have perfect lashes.  This Manga mascara is amazing.  Great performance and a great price!

  1. Hi Molly!

Thank you for all the lessons and suggestions. I’m over 50 and my makeup already looks better with your advice. Do you have any updated suggestions for drugstore mascara? It seems they have discontinued the Manga line.

    Thanks again,
    Candi Maloy

  2. Hi there! I found your blog when researching strawberry blonde makeup tips. I’m really enjoying your posts! I would love to know what you’re wearing on your cheeks and lips here. Thank you!
