Makeup For Recovering From Le Flu

Definitely not the most glamorous post I’ve ever written, lets be honest, but very necessary.  For the last week and a half I have had bronchitis and been through various stages of sleeping all day, non-stop coughing, nose blowing, fever (the worst) and a long urgent care visit where I wore a sweatshirt with food on it that I’d been sleeping in for two days because I just didn’t care anymore.  It was bleak.

Now that I am on the mend (thank you, Antibiotics!) I have actually looked in the mirror and actually did not recognize myself.  My skin is an odd combination of glowing (win) from all the sleep and peeling off in layers around my nose from all the nose blowing (lose).  My hair has been in a bun for a week and is matted in weird spots.  I’m pale and still look tired.

Been there, right?

Anyone who has ever been sick has had that moment of truth with the mirror, usually right before you have to go back to work.  You stand there wondering how on earth you can trick everyone into thinking you are fully Back In Business!

Well, here is my game plan:

Skin:  This starts while you are sick.  Keep either a bottle of 100% pure argan oil, coconut oil, or vaseline next to your bed.  After you blow your nose, put a generous dab of oil on either side of your nose, to prevent the skin from getting too rubbed and painful.  I can’t stand blowing my nose if I know it’ll hurt, so this prevents that and saves your skin.

Next up: You shall moisturize.  Put coconut oil on the ends of your hair and throw in up in a bun.  Then get your booty into a warm salt bath.  If your skin around your nose isn’t hurting, put a deep moisture mask on your face, neck, and chest.  Sit.  Enjoy.  Pretend you’ve talked to other humans in the last two weeks.

The Hair:  Apres the bath, shampoo, condition and blow dry as best you can.  You are probably still feeling exhausted, right?  I am.  Oh, the never ending exhaustion.  So I scrunch up my hair for natural body and only flat iron the pieces around the face, the top layer, and smooth out the ends.

The Makeup:  Again, I am going for speed here, but also glow.  I start by moisturizing, if needed add a drop of self-tanner for added glow.  Then, apply a CC cream on top of the moisturizer.  Lots of concealer.  Lots.  Next step is crucial: I add a drop of illuminator on the tops of my cheekbones, down my nose, and on the cupid’s bow of my lip.  Blend everything with a beautyblender.  Cream blush goes on next, in a bright (but not clownish) color.  I’m skipping contouring, but lighting dusting bronzer around my face on either side in the shape of a “3,” starting at the forehead and working my way down.  I put a bit of brown eyeliner (black will seem too harsh) as close as I can to my lash line on my top lashes.  Then I pat bronze eyeshadow all over my lid with a flat brush and under my eye with a pencil brush.  Taking a clean fluffy eye brush with no product on it, I sweep small circles right over the edge of the bronze shadow in the crease of my eye and under my eye to blend the shadow out, so there isn’t a harsh line.  I curl my lashes, then add 2 or 3 coats of mascara on the top and one coat on my bottom lashes.  Comb through them, so they look defined.  Then, I brush my brows up and add a bit of tinted brow gel.  I lightly dust only my T-zone with powder and use a bright peachy pink lip gloss to finish the look.

The slight sparkle in the bronze eyeshadow will bring light into your eyes.  The cheek color and bronzer will give your skin a bit of color and glow.  The gloss also tricks a little extra sparkle into your face.  I set all mine with a setting spray, only powder in the t-zone in case of fever sweating.  Oh, the glamour of being sick!  The CC cream is good because it gives your skin some coverage, but if you are still blowing your nose a million times a day, you won’t have a weird missing makeup gap on the sides of your nose like you would with heavier foundation.  Now, it’s time to venture out into the world of sunshine and other humans!

Honestly, as unnecessary as makeup might seem while you are getting better, doing the makeup for this post really picked my spirits back up.  It is just so fun to play with makeup and I started feeling more like myself again.  So have fun with it and don’t forget to throw a pack of tissues on your purse for your poor nose!

  1. So glad to hear you’re feeling better, I was sick-in-bed this week as well and today was the first
day I emerged into daylight, so I ladled on my makeup too, being a redhead (in my youth but all
grey & white now under the red hairdye) I look like a blank sheet of paper without makeup! Bleak, indeed!
You are most brave to photograph yourself while sick.
I just saw the pictures of your brushes so now I know what you meant by the pencil brush! I do have one,
    Yay!
    Stay well,
    Laura
