Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation | Review + Demo

I’m so excited to share this review and swatches of Charlotte Tilbury’s light-to-medium coverage foundation, called “Light Wonder.”

I had been wearing full coverage foundation every day when Charlotte’s line launched in the U.S. last year.  I went to the Nordstrom launch event at the Grove in Los Angeles, which was held outside on an insanely hot day.  Being the delicate little lily that I am, I started to get heat stroke and had to go inside the store to cool down. Pale kid life!  Anyone else have this problem?  I always have to be in the shade or my body cooks.

I did still get to meet Charlotte outside, but I’m so sweaty in those photos, it’s slightly mortifying.

Anyhow, once I cooled down inside the store, I got to swatching.  Something drew me to the Light Wonder foundation and it intrigued me, despite being such a light coverage product.  I was on such a heavier foundation kick, but still ended up purchasing the Light Wonder foundation and the Rock n’Kohl eye liner in Barbarella Brown, which I also loved.

Quick facts:

I spent the first month using the Light Wonder foundation going back and forth on whether or not I liked it.  I was piling the product on, I’m talking 3 to 4 layers minimum.  The result was full coverage, but things were feeling kind of greasy by mid day.  I had also purchased shade 4, which works for me when I have a faux tan, but is one shade too dark for my natural skin color.

After I used this foundation for closer to a month and tweaked how I applied it AND saw the results with a flash camera and on a video I filmed, I was hooked.  In photos my skin looked glowing, fresh and fully covered.  Once I adjusted how I used it, in real life, the coverage didn’t look like foundation.  Magical!

The foundation works by diffusing light, so that you get flawless looking skin and don’t have to use a ton of product.

I learned to adjust the coverage to two light layers and then add extra concealer on my light acne scars.  There is no concealer on in the photos above, until the last photo with full makeup.  I wanted you to be able to see how this foundation really looks and photographs and how it covers my redness.

I usually buff it out after blending with my fingers with this buffing brush, but occasionally I’ll use a beauty blender.  Sometimes the beauty blender actually blends too well with this foundation and makes the coverage too sheer for how I like my skin to look.

I sometimes wear primer underneath but feel like using a setting spray actually makes the biggest difference in how long the foundation lasts.  I always wear a setting spray, it’s a miracle on this earth.  I get a decent wear length with this foundation without one, but honestly setting spray is so great that I just hate skipping it with any foundation.  I feel like I’m wasting my makeup if I forget to use one.

This is a great foundation for dry and mature skin.  It gives skin a glow without having any shimmer in the formula.  I think oily skin types might find it too dewy feeling.  But for me, with dry skin and fine lines, I’ve noticed that it makes my skin, especially around my forehead, look much younger.

Another plus is the squeeze bottle.  I’ve never had a foundation in a squeeze bottle before.  It’s really sanitary, can easily be wiped off, and I shake it up a ton each time before I use it so the product is really blended.  Great packaging design!  I also love the rose gold touches, very high end look.

Overall, I’m so happy with this foundation.  It’s perfect for women with dry and/or mature skin, who don’t need or want heavy feeling, visible coverage, but still want their skin to look flawless.  I feel like it would be a great foundation for brides also, because it doesn’t look cakey at all in real life, but photographs like doll skin.  I will eventually purchase the shade 3 as well, so I can wear it when I’m not tan.  I should throw some quotes around “tan” because I’m so dang fair, ha!  But that is saying something for me, that I would repurchase a product.  Here are some shade comparisons with other foundations:

  1. I bought this foundation last week. Like you, I am also trying to figure out whether I like it or not. Something tells me that a primer would make it work better. Is the foundation silicone or water based? Would I need a silicone based primer?
