Beach-to-BBQ Summer Makeup Tutorial

Let me start this off by explaining that I know some people are beach purists, as in no-makeup/no-hair/just be.

I get that, I really do.  Until I moved from living by the beach to Hollywood.  30 minutes on a good day (meaning leave my house at 8 am) and ‘holy moley, will I ever get there?!’ on a bad day (leave my house at noon).

That’s when I realized that if I wanted to go to the beach and also hit up a bbq or get a drink after the beach, I’d have to be a little better prepared.  ‘Cuz momma ain’t driving home to shower/change/do makeup then driving all the way back for a taco.  So I came up with this makeup routine for days I know I’m going right from the beach or pool to the PAR-TAY.  I call it my beach-to-bbq-12-hour makeup.  I know it might seem like a lot of makeup at first, but trust me, it looks really natural once it’s all on and I don’t have to touch up a thing besides my lips all day.

An additional argument for wearing makeup to the beach is that with all the amazing broad spectrum SPF that now comes in face products, I can proudly say I have not gotten a single sunburn on my face since doing this routine.  As a Irish kid, I should get a medal for that.

The basics:  Clean looking skin, neutral matte eyes, and nude rosy lips.  The idea being all the shades are natural looking enough that if anything fades it’s not going to look crazy.

  1. 43 year old stay-at-home dinosaur here! This blog is so addicting for stay-at-home dinosaurs that have been cooped up all summer long w/the kids. Seriously, just in time for back to school! This blog is helping me get back to ‘me’ time! Thank you for all your helpful tips, just don’t tell my husband how much I’ve spent the last week at Sephora!

    • Haha, this stay-at-home dinosaur talk is cracking me up. 43 is young!! I love that you have become a part of the blog and love it, thank you, that means so much to me. And yes, I have been trying to crack down on my Sephora spending too!

      • Hi! I started the “stay at home dinosaur” joke NOT because we’re old but because, where I live, there is a lot of snobbery and disregard for women who choose to stay home full time with the kids. I live very close to New York City and most of the moms have careers outside the home. I support a woman’s right to choose WHATEVER she thinks is best, but I call myself a “dinosaur” because the stay-at-home mom thing is becoming extinct! I just want to clarify cause I would NEVER call us “old”. I’m 50, and I’ve NEVER felt happier. Do I want to feel pretty? Does the devil wear Prada? I love this blog cause she’s smart, brilliant and hilarious!

        • Lisa,

You are too sweet, thank you!! And the dinosaur joke totally makes sense now, because yes, stay-at-home moms are def becoming less common than when I was growing up. Funny timing, because my friend and I were just talking about this the other day (even though neither of us are moms yet.) So glad you are part of the blog and I love your comments!

          Molly

  2. Just want to tell you how much I love your blog! I was a makeup artist for 15 years and the last 7 years of my career I was the head of training for Shu Uemura North America. I was also the National Makeup Artist. I found you while doing research on my strawberry blonde hair and noticed that not only are you hilarious and a great makeup artist, but I find that you are the only beauty blogger whose opinion on products and techniques I wholeheartedly agree with! This is HUGE because I am soooo picky! This is my FIRST ever compliment to a beauty blogger, and I’m no spring chicken as I just turned the big 50! I retired from the beauty business at age 40 to be an old dinosaur of a stay at home mom, but I’m still a girly girl who stays current and practically sleeps on the floor of my local Sephora and CVS trolling the aisles for excellence. Keep up your genius, girl, so you can do 90 percent of the research for me and I can sit around eating Bon-bons, because that’s what people think stay-at-home dinosaurs are up to anyway. Love ya!

    • Can I be a complete dork and admit that I cried after reading your comment? It was just so nice and so unexpected. I really appreciated it, just beyond nice. Also, I love Shu Uemura, that’s amazing you were their National Makeup artist and did the training. Their products are so high quality. You’ll love a post I’m doing soon, I won a Shu Uemura contest and they sent me some gorgeous eye makeup as the prize! At any rate, thank you so much for your comment and the compliments. So glad you took the time to say that and I will keep the reviews coming!
