ABH Master Palette By Mario | Review + Swatches

When I was a kid, I loved watching my mother do her makeup for date nights with my dad.  It all seemed so glamorous to me.  She’d put these sparkly colors on her face and then they’d go out somewhere that seemed so mysterious and fancy to us kids.

She had this one little eyeshadow palette in particular that I loved.

It had so many colors, all in one tiny little navy blue compact, with the name “South Seas” written on the front in gold print.  It’s funny the things that stand out to us when we are young.

A few years ago, my mom gave it to me totally offhandedly.  Little does she know I treasure it.  I’ve mailed her boxes and boxes of products to try since then, but that one little palette sits in my makeup drawers, a rare gem.

The only shades she really used were a satin taupe and a satin creamy peach shade.  They are almost to the pan and the rest of the small palette sits pristine.  Rows of pink, purple, light green, sea blue all lined up, like a mermaid tail in one compact.

I love that little palette because it represents what makeup is supposed to be.  Transformative, enhancing, subtle, bold.  Makeup can be anything you want it to be.  It’s just magic, that we get to touch and be a part of every day.

When I opened the Master Palette by Mario, I had the same enchanted feeling I got watching my mom apply the South Seas palette.

The Details

This palette was created by makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic in collaboration with Anastasia Beverly Hills.  The palette contains 12 shades, 3 of which are matte.  It also comes with a double sided, synthetic fiber eyeshadow brush. It retails for $45.  It’s being sold in Sephora and Macy’s.  It is sold out on the Anastasia Beverly Hills website and on Ulta.com.

The Shades

When I first saw (through religious stalking on Instagram) that the palette only had 3 matte shades, I thought “huh.”  So eloquent, I know.  Mario had said it contained all his most used shades on clients.  For some reason, I just expected there to be more mattes.

After seeing the palette in real life, I realized Mario is so on the money with these shades.  Every single shade, except the green (which is still beautiful), are shades that I use on clients regularly.  1 | I felt like a super cool cat that I am using the same shades as this genius makeup artist.  2 | I am ordering a second palette for my kit, pronto.

Besides those three matte shades, all the other shadows have a satin or metallic finish.  This is my trick for making clients eyes pop!  Right over their eyeliner, I’ll smudge some satiny bronze or plum eyeshadow into the lash line.  This lights up the eyes and makes them look more vibrant.

Satin finish products are amazing, think baby/teenage skin.  No glitter, jut a shimmer/sheen that makes your skin looking healthy.

This palette will save me so much time, because all my matte transition shades are in one place, with a variety of the bronze and plum shades right next to them.  I usually have to mix 2 or 3 eyeshadow colors to get the right bronze or plum shades for a client, but now they all sit side-by-side in one essential palette.

These shades make any eye color pop.  It’s insane.  I’ve worn shades from this palette every single days since it came in the mail.  And every single time, someone asks me what I’m wearing on my eyes.

I’ve noticed that most women tend to use black or brown liners and eyeshadows, sometimes as more of a default choice.  While these colors can be really striking, the shades that will actually help accentuate your eyes the most are bronzes and plums.  Both of which this palette has plenty of varieties of.  So far, my personal most used shades are: Paris, Muse, NYC, Lula, and Isabel.

The Formula

These are by far the creamiest eyeshadows I have ever tried from Anastasia Beverly Hills.  Whatever magic they put into this formula, they need to hold on to for all their eyeshadows!  They had a great formula before, but these Mario formulas are next level.

They blend easily, but without diffusing all the pigment.  Have you ever gone to blend an eyeshadow and it looks like it just disappears on your eye?  And then you keep packing more and more on?  That won’t happen with these shadows.  They stay vibrant, but blend beautifully.

I have applied with and without an eye primer, to test them out, and they will crease without a primer.  That’s the only downside that I’ve found.  I highly recommend this primer from Lorac.  When I used that with these ABH shadows, they stayed put 16+ hours without creasing or fading.

Anastasia Beverly Hills eyeshadows are formulated without parabens, phthalates, or sulfates (which dry skin out).

Also, I didn’t plan on using the brush that came with it, the quality on most brushes that come with a palette aren’t great, but this one is also a stand out!  I’ve been using it quite a lot, with this heaven sent Wayne Goss blending brush for blending out the crease shade and this amazing brush for applying color all over the lid.

Shade Descriptions + Swatches

I like Sephora’s description of the shades, so I’m going to share them right from their site:

– 12 x 0.02 oz/ 0.5 mL Eye shadows in Hollywood (metallic wheat gold with a satin finish), NYC (rich chocolate brown with a satin finish), Kim (tan with a satin finish), Muse (rose gold with a satin finish), Marina (champagne with a metallic finish), Claudia (slate with a velvet finish), Lula (soft taupe with an ultra-matte finish), Isabel (burnt orange with an ultra-matte finish), Violeta (dark chocolate with an ultra-matte finish), 5th Ave (gold leaf with a metallic finish), Bronx (metallic olive with a satin finish), Paris (gilded brown with a satin finish)

The Wrap Up

This is one of my all-time favorite makeup purchases.  Each shade is incredibly flattering and wearable.  There will not be a single untouched shade in this palette for me.  I will be adding a second one to my pro kit.  Usually I get a pro MUA discount on most products, but this palette is limited edition, and didn’t qualify.  I still paid full price for two palettes, because I think it’s that worthwhile to own.  When each shade is so useable, it becomes a great value really quickly.

This palette is a must-have for everyone, but especially for strawberry blondes and redheads.

I haven’t even gotten a chance to dive in to the full potential of this palette, and I already wanted to recommend it, as it is limited edition and won’t be around forever.  Although, I do hope that Anastasia Beverly Hills reconsiders making it a permanent fixture in their line.  ABH and Mario should be incredibly proud of this beautiful palette.

The Pics

A picture is worth 1,000 words.  Here is a soft daytime look and a more dramatic look all done using only shades from the Mario palette.

  1. OMG! I was looking thru my old makeup stash and actually have the south seas palette of your mother’s. I only uses the purple and blue colors, the rest are pristine. LOL! Your blog is the only mention I’ve found anywhere on the internet on this palette.

  2. This seems to be sold out everywhere. Is there a similar palette for redheads that you would recommend? I just have sucky drugstore shadows right now and want somelets good quality shadows that are pigmented and blend well. If you have any recommendations, I’d be very appreciative.

  3. I’ve had my eye on this palette but have heard such mixed reviews. This is definitely the most thorough review though! I love the shades. Have you had any problems with inconsistency of the shadows?

    • Oh, thank you! I’m glad it was helpful. I really haven’t, but I do use my Lorac eye primer all the time. I feel like that holds everything in place and makes it more pigmented to start. So I haven’t really experienced the fall-out or creasing that others have.

Overall, the Lorac primer and Mario palette have been my go-to lately.

  4. You are so preaching to the choir with plum and bronze! My favorite combo is bronze lid to crease and plum liner.

The woman who did my wedding makeup a couple years back said “oh! I don’t usually like purple but that’s pretty good!” to this combo I’d worn to work before meeting with her. Expecting not much from a non-pro perhaps lol. She did a great job and turned me into a Bond Girl goddess on my wedding day!

Love your blog and seeing your gorgeous self on IG!

    • OMG Bond Girl Goddess sounds incredible!!! I wish I could see it. Yes, I wish bronze eyeliner was as common to use as black has become. It’s so, so flattering on everyone!
