Organic Makeup & Beauty with Jade Roper

Last week I posted {this} review on Jade Roper’s new organic lip gloss line, Naturally Jade cosmetics.

As I started writing the post I realized it was going to be way too long if I did the review and the breakdown of everything I used. So here is the product breakdown.

I get tons of questions about organic/all natural/vegan makeup products. And it’s tricky, because just like with all makeup lines and products, there are some products that work and some not-so-much. Also, some products I used are organic and natural, and some others have some but not 100% natural ingredients. There were some products I’ve been wanting to try, but I just didn’t have the budget to buy a whole new set of products, so I did the best I could with the natural products I’ve been adding into my collection.

The Look

Jade and I both wanted to do more dramatic look, so I went for a smokey eye. Whenever I think of organic makeup, I always think of a soft, natural looking face, so I wanted to show a different look.

If you’ve been watching Jade on The Bachelor this season, you can tell that she’s a natural beauty.  Like, a knock-out without a drop of makeup on her face.  Another reason I thought it would be fun to go full-glam, just to try something different.

We still kept the smokey eye on the lighter-toned side, because we wanted it to be pretty and not look over-the-top with the red lip gloss. We swatched the red gloss first and then went slightly darker on the upper lid shadow for the pink and rose glosses.

Products Used

Lip Balm: I prepped Jade’s lips for the three gloss color changes with this Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask intense balm. It’s very thick so a dab will do ya.

Foundation: Vapour Organic Atmosphere Soft Focus Foundation, shade s115. To be totally honest, I like but don’t love this foundation yet. It does have a soft, dewy glow. But even on my dry skin, it was way too greasy. I applied it over a matte finish moisturizer on Jade and liked the results way more, so I’m going to keep trying this foundation. I think I can make it work, it’s just one of those products I’m going to have to play with different combinations to get the right look. For a matte foundation, I love the Tarte Amazonian Clay foundation {post}.

Tools: I used a combination of Tarte brushes and the beauty blender Pure blender.

Moisturizer: The matte moisturizer I used before foundation was Physician’s Formula Organic Wear CC Cream SPF 20, in shade Light/Medium. This is an amazing drugstore moisturizing CC cream (color correction cream) that continues to blow my mind. It’s affordable, has amazing medium to full coverage, and hydrates. It does have a matte finish, so make sure your skin is exfoliated prior to using it. This stuff is seriously amazing. Prepare to be hooked. Whenever my drugstore has a sale on Physician’s Formula, I buy 4 of these at a time, so I’ll never run out. I use it on my neck and chest as well, for natural coverage of my sun damage and to blend the look of my full coverage foundation with the rest of my body. Ugh, I’m obsessed.

I also used this on Jade’s neck and chest, you can see what I mean in the pics below how it really helps gives a more natural appearance between the neck and face, so there isn’t a stark contrast of makeup and no-makeup.  I applied it with my fingers and then blended with the same beauty blender I used for her foundation.

Concealer: Tarte Maracuja Creaseless concealer, applied with my fingers, then blended with a mini beauty blender, and set with Tarte Smooth Operator setting powder.

Contour/Highlight: This was one area where I had to improvise and I used Becca Lowlight and Highlight products. They are not all-natural, but they don’t contain parabens. As contouring and highlighting has become more mainstream within the last couple of years, newer products keep emerging so I’m sure this is a category all natural makeup companies are developing products for. One highlighting product I’ve been wanting to try is the RMS Living Luminizer. I’ve heard amazing things about it.

Blush: I used the Tarte Cosmetics cream cheek stain in The Perfect Pink (similar to Fearless) and set it lightly with the powder blush in Glisten.

Eyes: I used Tarte Amazonian Clay eyeliner in Black. (Grab this 12 piece set for $25 while it’s still in stock, just make sure to set the liner with matching powder to make it last). If you just want one liner, this black shade is creamy and dramatic.  I lined her upper lids close to the lash line and her waterline, then put a dark brown eyeshadow right over the upper liner, and directly below the waterline, under her lashes on the underside of her eyes.

Shadow: I used a combination of E.L.F mineral eye shadows ($3 each!) and a Tarte shadow palette in the brown shades (this palette works out to $3.66 a shade! The one I used is no longer sold). I used shade Natural from E.L.F. in the crease of Jade’s eyes, then from Tarte Shimmering Sable (shimmering taupe) underneath, and Matte Coffee Bean (matte dark brown) in the outer edge. On the inner corner and under the arch of her eyebrow I used Shimmering Buff (lightest cream shimmer shade).

Eyebrows:  I used the Tarte matte coffee bean eyeshadow, the dark brown shade, applied with a small angled brush to fill out Jade’s brows.  I set it with a light gel.  She already has really great full brows, so I didn’t need to use much.

Mascara/Lashes: I applied individual false lashes from Red Cherry Lashes in medium and short lengths with Kiss aloe lash glue. I curled her lashes and the falsies together and applied a bit of Tarte Amazonian Clay mascara to both. Whenever there is an option to buy a travel size mascara, I always do, because it’s the one product I replace every three months, so the travel size is perfect for me.

Lip liner: I used E.L.F. mineral lip liner to keep the glosses from moving outside the lip lines.

Hair:

Before we started makeup, I curled Jade’s hair away from her face with this tapered curling iron, the set the curls to cool. I love her natural part and how her hair goes at the roots so I made sure to leave that as-is. After we finished makeup, I pulled them down, shook them out with my hands, and teased the crown.
